AZL 62710-2 Conrail EMD SW1500 #9544
Since the inception of Z scale, US modelers have asked the question, when will a true switcher be commercially available? Today is the day. AZL is excited to announce the immediate release of SW1500s.
Produced by EMD between 1966 and 1974, a total of 808 SW1500 switchers were produced. Over 60 railroads ordered these locomotives including the majority of the class 1 railroads. The SW1500 was rated at 1,500h. While chiefly a freight locomotive, the SW1500s would see limited passenger service as well on the commuter railroads. Through the years, the locomotive would be passed on to a number of railroads and short-lines. The design and reliability of these locomotives comes through when you consider large numbers are still in use today, nearly 55 years after they were first released.

Bereits 1936 hatte die damalige Lübeck-Büchener Eisenbahn dampfgeführte Wendezüge bei Henschel entwickeln lassen. Die junge Bundesbahn griff diese Idee nach 1949 wieder auf und nahm 1951 die ersten Dampfwendezüge in Betrieb - gezogen und geschoben von Loks der Baureihe 78 (pr. T 18). Diese eigneten sich perfekt dafür: stark, schnell, zuverlässig und in größeren Stückzahlen vorhanden. Man orientierte sich beim Dampfwendezug an der Schifffahrt, wo der Kapitän über ein Befehlsgerät Anweisungen gab, wie Maschine und Steuerung zu bedienen sind. Solche Geräte wurden jeweils in den Steuerwagen und im Führerstand der Loks installiert. Im Schiebebetrieb saß der Lokführer im Steuerwagen und bediente die Bremse. Der Heizer bediente nach Befehlsvorgaben auf der Dampflok die Steuerung und den Regler, und das zusätzlich zu den angestammten Heizeraufgaben. Dieses System bewährte sich so gut, dass 1959 bereits 74 Dampfloks im Wendezugdienst eingesetzt wurden. Die T 18 fuhren im Vorortverkehr von Hamburg und Frankfurt, im Ruhrschnellverkehr, im Bezirk Hannover, rund um Wuppertal und schließlich auch im Saarland. Am längsten hielten sich die Wendezug-T 18 im S-Bahn-Vorlaufbetrieb zwischen Hamburg, Bergedorf und Aumühle. Dort wurden sie zum Winterfahrplan 1968/69 von V 100 abgelöst.
Vorbild: Wendezugfähige Dampflokomotive BR 78 der Deutschen Bundesbahn (DB) im Zustand der Epoche IIIb um 1965.
Modell: Überarbeitetes Modell mit LED-Spitzenbeleuchtung 3x weiß/2x rot im Wechsel der Fahrtrichtung. Ausgestattet mit Glockenankermotor, feinem, vollständigem, voll funktionsfähigem Gestänge. Ebenso mit Bremsimitation, Sandfallrohre und Schienenräumer. Alle Treibachsen angetrieben. Länge über Puffer 70 mm.
